This is a letter to endorse Sam Hammar for the position of Mayor for our city.  Rather than recite the list of her qualifications (and there are many), I’d like to share my personal experience with Sam over the five years since my family moved to Melrose.

I met Sam when she was running for State Senate at a local campaign event in 2018.  I was immediately impressed by her ability to connect with people, her vision, and the infectious enthusiasm and energy she brought.  So I voted for her.

However, she did not win.  And, to be honest, I thought that would be the last I would be hearing Sam Hammar’s name.  I could not have been more wrong.  Since that defeat, Sam has been a force of nature turning her energy and passion towards Melrose.  She dusted herself off and went to work -- co-organzing and orchestrating the much-needed Override campaign; hosting the lively weekly community talkshow “Let’s Talk Melrose!”, co-founding the Melrose Creative Alliance (the incredibly useful resource for connecting people to the arts and cultural events), and co-founding Melrose Together (a volunteer group dedicated to helping neighbors during the height of the COVID crisis).  The list goes on, but in short, we are a far richer city because of her dedication and commitment.

Sam, through actions and not just words, has proven that she is a capable and formidable leader. In the aftermath of her defeat for the State Senate, Sam, as a volunteer(!), has been able to accomplish more than many city officials have done.   If there is an event concerning Melrose, you will be sure to find Sam in attendance with a smile and willingness to discuss your concerns over a cup of coffee.

I can only imagine what more she can do as Melrose Mayor.
